Buttercup squash is one of the many fall squash varieties but a little less well known than some of its relatives like butternut, spaghetti, acorn or even delicata and kabocha. I wrote an entire guide to winter squash a bit ago and while I covered the basic winter squash in that article, buttercup wasn’t really on my radar back then. Ever popular, Buttercup squash is characterized by its small 6 1/2 inch diameter fruit. The skin is dark green with silvery white stripes, and the flesh is orange and dry. Produces 4-6 squash per plant on sprawling 8-10 foot vines. Our Burgess strain has an outstanding flavor, small cavity, and thick meat.
Growing Tips
Plant seeds ½” - ¾” deep. Plant spacing varies depending on vine type. Bush type plants should be planted closer and vine types should be planted farther apart. Squash need to have approximately 25 - 30 sq. ft.
